National Cage-Free Directory: August 2024
The national cage free directory is the end-product of our strategy two [working with egg producers and stakeholders] to end the abuse of chickens in factory farming. Farmers on this list have pledged to use cage free farming systems and other higher animal welfare practices in the industry. This update contains the most recent additions to the directory.
VOLTA WORKSHOP REPORT
The Animal Welfare League hosted its 5th edition of the Cage-Free Project Workshop in Ho, Volta region, on 30th July, 2024. This aimed to educate egg producers from the Volta and Oti regions on: cage-free systems, the five freedoms used to assess the welfare of animals, cage-free progress in Africa, Battery cages and the harmful effects on layer hens, biosecurity and antimicrobial resistance, productivity in the poultry industry, and the Animal Welfare League’s farmers’ network and cage-free directory.
Ghana's Poultry Industry Today: Research into the Economics of Cage and Cage-Free Systems
The Animal Welfare League commissioned independent researchers from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) to examine the economic and practical implications of battery cages versus cage-free systems thanks to the generous support of the Tiny Beam Fund FAI grant program.
This was to effectively challenge the prevailing attribution of improved productivity, efficiency and increased profit margins to the adoption of cage systems in the poultry industry and to also advocate for a transition to cage-free systems.
