ANIMAL WELFARE LEAGUE JOINS 12TH BIENNIAL CONGRESS OF THE GHANA HOTELS ASSOCIATION

A presentation by the Animal Welfare League Corporate Campaigns lead

The Animal welfare League was present at the 12th Ghana Hotels Association Biennial Congress on April 25, 2024 at the Akroma Plaza in Takoradi in the western region of Ghana.

This appearance was a sequel to an invitation from the Ghana Hotels Association to the Animal Welfare League - an invitation which entrenches the MOU between them to promote quality animal welfare standards in the hospitality industry.

The Ghana Hotels Association consists of Managing Proprietors, Managing Directors or Accredited Representatives of hospitality facilities that have been certified and licensed by the Ghana Tourism Authority to offer accommodation, catering and other tourism services in Ghana.

These members are relevant stakeholders in the hospitality industry and play a key role in ensuring quality animal welfare standards in the supply chain of hospitality facilities.

During the congress which was themed: Adapting Emerging Trends in Global Hospitality Management for Economic Growth and Sustainability of the Hotel Industry in Ghana, the Animal Welfare League team delivered a presentation on the topic: corporate cage-free commitments and the importance of adopting cage-free policy; this is an initiative by the Animal Welfare League to encourage stakeholders in the hospitality industry to adopt cage-free policies such as ethical sourcing of eggs in their hospitality establishment from cage-free farms.

This ensures strict adherence to optimum animal welfare standards in the supply chain of these hospitality facilities which in turn has the potential of encouraging farmers especially egg producers to comply with the minimum animal welfare standards set by the Animal Welfare League in their farming activities.

Following the presentation, there were several questions by the association members including;

  • The distribution of the Animal Welfare League  National Cage-Free Directory in Ghana.

  • The cost effectiveness of cage free eggs against those from the general market.

  • The feasibility of the logistics involved in ethical egg sourcing from cage free farms as against their initial egg sourcing from the general market.

There was a general buy-in by the members especially members from the Northern part of Ghana and the Volta region. They further expressed interest in inviting the Animal Welfare League to their hospitality establishments for further discussions.
